In past years, Thanksgiving has always been a very hectic time for me. No matter if it was having relatives over at my Mom's home, having loads of friends over at my own place, or having new family join us at our tiny table, everything that went into having a wonderful Thanksgiving was stressful: making a shopping list, getting the house ready for company, and the hours of cooking for food that would be devoured in less than 5 minutes. If I look back now, I'm wondering why I did all of that. Why did I spend so much time, money, and energy for something that I hardly remember now? If you're on the same boat as me, how about joining me this year and having a simple Thanksgiving. X the long list, forget the meticulous cleaning, and shorten the cooking time by not having such an elaborate buffet of food. And oh, skip the Black Friday shopping. Yep, you read that right. Think about it: is there something you truly need, not want - need, at any one given store that is worth the long lines, the possible accidents that may happen during the rush, and the time away from sharing real memories with your family and friends? Is there really another "thing" that you can't possibly live without? Think about the many people in this world right now whose lives have been altered by climate changes, political tensions, unemployment, religious persecutions, criminal acts, or medical conditions. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that the one thing that they are most grateful for this Thanksgiving is having the breath of life, and just knowing that they have another day to live on this magnificent planet of ours is nothing short of a miracle. My family and I are fortunate enough to not be facing any of these challenges at the moment, but nonetheless, we are also most grateful for our lives and will be celebrating this Thanksgiving just the way it was meant to be - being truly thankful for everything that we have without wanting more than what we have been given.
So this year when all the dining has concluded, warm up with a hot cup of cocoa or a large glass of wine, watch a movie or play board games with the family, relax and know that you will be among the many who have also chosen to sleep in and get well rested. Smile and be glad you have decided to just have a simple Thanksgiving this year. I know I am.
